Footscray Transit City: renewal and regeneration to promote a walkable Footscray
This paper provides a case study of Footscray Transit City and demonstrates how various levels of government (local and state) can work collaboratively with the private sector to promote sustainable city form in the inner Melbourne suburbs. The paper will discuss legislative, governance and planning frameworks that are in place to facilitate renewal and regeneration and provide certainty to the local community and development industry about the expectations and future visions of centre. Footscray Transit City provides tangible examples of overcoming obstacles to meet community expectations and demonstrates the importance of setting a clear vision in collaboration with the community and industry. The author provides a leading practice example of collaborative (re)visioning of an established suburban centre and demonstrates how governance and legislative frameworks can be put in place together with infrastructure improvements to achieve renewal and regeneration in the suburbs.
