Proceedings: Austroads National Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA) Workshop

An Austroads national workshop on stone mastic asphalt (SMA) was held to resolve differences in requirements for SMA in different parts of Australasia. Delegates decided that two mix types were required to cover the desired range of properties. Standard SMA will principally address deformation resistance, durability, permeability and fatigue and crack resistance. It will have surface texture properties between a dense graded and an open graded asphalt. The second mix type, 'High Surface Texture Asphalt', will deliver texture greater than 1 millimetre (sand patch) throughout the life of the surfacing. Implementation of the workshop outcomes will be the responsibility of Austroads' committees.
