SOME MODELS FOR TRAFFIC CONGESTION

A STOCHASTIC MODEL IS DISCUSSED FOR TRAFFIC CONGESTION ON A SINGLE-LANE ROAD WITH CAPACITY S. THE NUMBER OF VEHICLES ON THE ROAD AT THE TIME IS DENOTED BY X(T). THE TIME-DEPENDENT AND STATIONARY DISTRIBUTIONS OF X(T) UNDER SUITABLE INPUT AND OUTPUT CONDITIONS ARE OBTAINED, AND A MEASURE OF TRAFFIC CONGESTION IS SUGGESTED. NUMERICAL RESULTS FOR THIS MEASURE ARE CALCULATED FOR DIFFERENT VALUES OF THE RELEVANT INPUT/OUTPUT PARAMETERS. THE MODEL IS THEN EXTENDED TO THE TWO-LANE CASE (E.G.,FAST AND SLOW LANES) AND BOTH DETERMINISTIC AND STOCHASTIC FORMULATIONS OF THE PROBLEM ARE GIVEN. THE DETERMINISTIC MODEL IS TRACTABLE BUT THE STOCHASTIC MODEL DOES NOT READILY GIVE AN EXPLICIT SOLUTION. A METHOD OF FINDING THE STATIONARY PROBABILITIES OF THE NUMBERS OF VEHICLES IN BOTH LANES IS OUTLINED, AND EXPLICIT SOLUTIONS ARE STATED FOR A SIMPLE CASE. /AUTHOR/
