An assessment of geogrid use in railways and asphalt applications

This paper presents the highlights of the key findings from 28 years research at University of Nottingham on the use of geogrids in the reinforcement of asphalt for highways and other paved areas and assesses the state of knowledge as a basis for sound design and application. It also considers recent research into the use of geogrids in reinforcement of railway ballast. Important areas for future research are then identified. While the paper focuses mainly on the use of polymeric geogrids, some reference is made to work carried out with steel and glass fibre products.
