The possibilities of utilizing data obtained from laser measurements of pavement surface texture
Changes in the condition of a road manifest themselves as varying roughness of the pavement surface when viewed both longitudinally and laterally. The condition of the road network is observed regularly, enabling the Finnish Road Administration (FinnRA) to use the information for decisions on budgeting, the strategic direction of finances, road maintenance planning and contract purchasing. Laser technology has been used since 2003. From these measurements it is possible to obtain data about rating indexes already in use (IRI, rut depths and crossfall). It is also possible to obtain new rating indexes - such as pavement surface texture - which describe the vertical deviation of the road surface from the true planar surface, although these rating indexes presently do not have target values. The aim of the study was to discover and explain possible uses for the measured texture data and define target values for pavement texture. The averages of the RMS values were studied according to different variables (the functional class of the road, traffic volume, pavement type, and the age of the pavement). Target values for pavement texture are proposed, and an additional proposal based on condition levels where other roughness indexes are included is also made. In the future, texture values could be used in pavement maintenance projects as quality control attributes and condition parameters in road network measurements.
