THE DEVELOPMENT OF AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS SINCE 1965

THE CURRENT USE OF AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS IN BUS FLEETS IN THE PRINCIPAL COUNTRIES OF THE WORLD HAS BEEN REVIEWED BY QUESTIONNAIRE, PROGRESS IN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS SINCE 1965 IS DISCUSSED IN DETAIL, AND FUTURE PROSPECTS FOR AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION IN MOTORBUSES ARE NOTED. AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS ARE FIRST CLASSIFIED AS TO PRINCIPLES AND DESIGN, AFTER WHICH DETAILED ANALYSES ARE MADE OF SEVERAL PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS MADE SINCE 1965: THE PONT A MOUSSON HVD 211 AS 60, THE SAVIEM R 107-7-2, THE VOITH, THE S. M. R. D. R. S. I. 0.95, THE SCANIA HR 500, AND THE MERCEDES BENZ W3D 080. THE QUESTIONNAIRE SURVEY WAS ANSWERED BY 63 NETWORKS, IN WHICH THE USE OF AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS HAD RISEN FROM 26.9% OF VEHICLES IN 1965 TO 37.8% IN 1971; AMONG THE 53 NETWORKS THAT RESPONDED TO BOTH SURVEYS, THE SHIFT WAS EVEN MORE MARKED, FROM 27% TO 41.4%. EXPERIENCE SHOWS THAT AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS ADD ABOUT 15% TO PURCHASE PRICE, UP TO 15% IN FUEL CONSUMPTION, AND SOME UNQUANTIFIED AMOUNT TO MAINTENANCE COSTS. THE GREAT ADVANTAGE OF AUTOMATIC TRNASMISSIONS, APART FROM MORE RATIONAL USE OF SUCH IMPORTANT UNITS AS ENGINE AND REAR AXLE, IS HTAT IN A TIME OF DETERIORATING TRAFFIC CONDITIONS THEY FREE THE DRIVER TO DEVOTE ALL HIS ATTENTION TO THE DRIVING TASK. INCREASED CONCERN ABOUT NOISE AND AIR POLLUTION MAY IN THE LONG RUN REQUIRE REPLACEMENT OF CONVENTIONAL AND AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS BY ELECTRICAL OR HYDROSTATIC ONES.
