EFFECT AT LANE PLACEMENT OF TRUCK TRAFFIC ON FREEWAY FLOW CHARACTERISTICS
A TRAFFIC FLOW SIMULATION COMPUTER MODEL HAS BEEN DEVELOPED BY WILBUR SMITH AND ASSOCIATES THAT HAS GOOD CORRELATION WITH ACTUAL TRAFFIC FLOW CONDITIONS IN RESPECT TO VEHICLE GENERATION, VEHICLE PLACEMENT, AND MAINLINE CAR- FOLLOWING AND LANE-CHANGING LOGIC. BASIC DATA FOR MODEL EVALUATION WERE DEVELOPED FROM TIME-LAPSE MOTION PICTURES AT A SAMPLE LOCATION ON THE ATLANTA DOWNTOWN FREEWAY SYSTEM. THE "GEORGIA MODEL" REPORTED HERE WAS DEVELOPED FOLLOWING EVALUATION OF GENERAL- AND SPECIAL-PURPOSE SIMULATION MODELS OF THE MIDWEST RESEARCH INSTITUTE, NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY, AND THE TEXAS TRANSPORTATION INSTITUTE. THE PRESENT MODEL HAS THE ADVANTAGES OF SIMPLE PROGRAMMING STRUCTURE AND ECONOMICAL DEMANDS ON COMPUTER TIME. ALTHOUGH USED HERE TO SIMULATE TRUCK FLOW, THE MODEL CONSTITUTES THE BASIC FRAMEWORK FOR A GENERAL-PURPOSE FREEWAY SIMULATION MODEL. AT PRESENT IT DOES NOT INCLUDE ROUTINES FOR ENTERING AND EXISTING TRAFFIC AT RAMPS.
