Maintenance and repairs to Backwater Cowal Bridge, Narromine : review of environmental factors

Bridge Bn 4388 occurs over the Backwater Cowal along the Peak Hill Road (MR89) approximately 4 kilometres south of Narromine providing a link between the towns of Narromine and Tomingley. Within the region, the Peak Hill Road links the Newell Highway at Tomingley to the Mitchell Highway at Narromine, bypassing Dubbo. The Roads and Traffic Authority has identified the need for maintenance and repairs to the Backwater Cowal Bridge involving the installation of gabions rock mattresses at each abutment. The existing bridge formation is showing signs of erosion at each abutment which is resulting in sedimentation and erosion of the creek banks and soil material impacting on the efficient operation of Backwater Cowal. The purpose of this review is to describe the proposal, to document the likely impacts of the proposal on the environment and to detail protective measures to be implemented.
