CRITERIA FOR THE DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF ADVANCED GRAPHIC GUIDE SIGNS

SIGNING SYSTEMS DESIGNED TO BETTER COMMUNICATED ROADWAY INTERCHANGE AND ROUTE GUIDANCE INFORMATION TO THE DRIVER ARE DEVELOPED AND TESTED. EMPHASIS WAS PLACED ON DETERMINING THE APPLICABILITY OF GRAPHIC OR MAP SIGNING COMPARED TO CONVENTIONAL GUIDE SIGNING. THE STUDY CONSIDERED INTERCHANGES WHERE GRAPHIC GUIDE SIGNS SHOULD BE USED TECHNIQUES TO TEST GUIDE SIGN CONCEPTS IN A LABORATORY, GRAPHIC CONCEPTS AND CHARACTERISTICS, AND PRESENTATION OF RESULTS IN A MANNER MEANINGFUL TO HIGHWAY AND TRAFFIC ENGINEERS. THE RESULTS INDICATE GRAPHIC GUIDE SIGNS PERMITTED SIGNIFICANTLY BETTER ROUTE GUIDANCE PERFORMANCE THAN CONVENTIONAL SIGNS ON CERTAIN INTERCHANGES (COLLECTOR-DISTRIBUTOR WITH LANE DROP, AND MULTIPLE SPLIT RAMPS). GRAPHIC SIGNS ALSO CONVEY RELATIVE EXIT SPEEDS AND LAND DROP INFORMATION EFFECTIVELY. /AUTHOR/
