PROPORTIONING VALVE TO SKID CONTROL--A LOGICAL PROGRESSION
A FAMILY OF BRAKE-CONTROL DEVICES CONSISTS OF LOAD- SENSITIVE PROPORTIONING VALVES AND SKID CONTROL SYSTEMS. THE PROPORTIONING VALVES TEND TO MAKE THE BRAKING PRESSURE MORE NEARLY PORPORTIONAL TO THE INSTANTANEOUS NORMAL FORCE ON THE WHEELS. THE ANTI-SKID CONTROLS TEND TO KEEP THE AMOUNT OF WHEEL SLIP AT THE OPTIMUM VALUE FOR MAXIMUM COEFFICIENT OF FRICTION. ECONOMIC CONDISERATIONS FORCE THE PERFORMANCE OF ACTUAL HARDWARE TO BE SOMEWHAT LESS THAN THAT PREDICTED FROM THE SIMPLE VIEWPOINT OF OPTIMUM PERFORMANCE.
