A TUNNEL TRAFFIC CONTROL AND SURVEILLANCE SYSTEM

PRESENTLY THERE IS INSTALLED IN THE SOUTH TUBE OF THE LINCOLN TUNNEL A TRAFFIC CONTROL SYSTEM AND A TRAFFIC SURVEILLANCE SYSTE,. THE CONTROL SYSTEMS, USING PHOTOCELLS AS VEHICLE DETECTORS, CALCULATES ACTUAL TRAFFIC FLOW PARAMETERS AND USING THESE PARAMETERS DETERMINES WHEN THE FLOW RATE AT THE TUNNEL ENTERANCE SHOULD BE IMPEDED TO PROVIDE FLUID TRAFFIC FLOW IN THE TUNNEL. THE SURVEILLANCE SYSTEM, ALSO USING PHOTOCELLS AS VEHICLE DECTECTORS, IS ABLE TO DETERMINE AN ABRUPT DECREASE IN TUNNEL TRAFFIC FLOW INDICATING A POSSIBLE VEHICLE STOPPAGE. /AUTHOR/
