A PARTIAL ANALYSIS OF TRIP GENERATION

RESIDENTIAL TRIP GENERATION WAS ANALYZED AT TRAFFIC ASSIGNMENT ZONES. DATA COLLECTED IN THE 1963-64 WACO URBAN TRANSPORTATION STUDY WERE USED IN THE ANALYSIS. REGRESSION MODELS FOR NON-RESIDENTIAL, RESIDENTIAL TRIP GENERATION PRODUCTIONS AND ATTRACTIONS, AS WELL AS ORIGINS AND DESTINATIONS, WERE DEVELOPED AND ANALYZED IN THE STUDY. THE GENERAL OBJECTIVES OF THE INVESTIGATION WERE TO: (1) IDENTIFY THE INDEPENDENT VARIABLES WHICH PROVIDE THE MOST EFFICIENT ESTIMATES OF RESIDENTIAL TRIP GENERATION, (2) COMPARE THE USE OF RATES CALUCULATED ON THE BASIS OF SINGLE INDEPENDENT VARIABLES WITH THE USE OF CONVENTIONAL MULTIPLE REGRESSION MODELS FOR TRIP GENERATION ESTIMATES, AND (3) DETERMINE THE CONDITIONS UNDER WHICH THE STRATIFICATION OF TRIPS BY PURPOSE AND/OR DIRECTION CAN BE USED TO IMPROVE THE PRECISION OF TRIP GENERATION ESTIMATES. IT WAS FOUND THAT BASIC DEMOGRAPHIC AND LAND USE ACTIVITY DATA SUCH AS POPULATION, LABOR FORCE, EMPLOYMENT, DWELLING UNITS, AND AUTOMOBILES PROVIDE REASONABLE ESTIMATES OF TRIP GENERATION FOR TRAFFIC ASSIGNMENT ZONES. THE CONVENTIONAL OR UNWEIGHTED LEAST SQUARES MODELS PROVIDE RELATIVELY ACCURATE AND UNBIASED ESTIMATES FOR HOME BASED WORK PRODUCTIONS. THE RELATION BETWEEN THE VARIANCE OF THE NUMBER OF TRIPS AND ZONE SIZE INDICATED THAT THE APPLICATION OF THE WEIGHTED LEAST SQUARES WOULD PROVIDE MORE PRECISE TRIP ESTIMATES THAN THE CONVENTIONAL LEAST SQUARES TECHNIQUE. THE FOLLOWING ESTIMATORS ARE SUGGESTED ON THE BASIS OF THE VARIOUS ESTIMATES EXAMINED: (1) HOME BASED WORK PRODUCTIONS, (2) HOME BASED NON-WORK PRODUCTIONS, (3) HOME BASED ATTRACTIONS, AND (4) NON-HOME BASED PRODUCTIONS AND ATTRACTIONS. FOR THE THREE PURPOSES CONSIDERED, STRATIFICATION BY PURPOSE IMPROVED THE REGRESSION ESTIMATES. STRATIFICATION OF TRIPS BY PURPOSE AND/OR DIRECTION FOR ESTIMATION IS USEFUL ONLY AS LONG AS TRIPS OF EACH CATEGORY IS BEST ESTIMATED BY DIFFERENT INDEPENDENT VARIABLES OR SETS OF INDEPENDENT VARIABLES.
