Level 2 inspections: developing a bridge program from level 2 inspections
Prior to 1995 bridge inspections were completely on an ad hoc basis usually when a structure had problems and which the asset manager thought he needed a second opinion as to what he needed to do to fix the problems. Three levels of inspection were described in the VicRoads Bridge Inspection Manual, and a timeframe for the inspections documented: Level 1, Maintenance Inspections by road patrols; Level 2, Condition Inspections by qualified inspectors; Level 3 Engineering Inspections by experienced accredited bridge engineers. The Level 2 system is generally aimed at maintenance and repair of defects, though there are some strengthening and redecking options provided in the treatment of some defects. VicRoads has produced a Bridge Inspection Manual which documents the entire system and provides both commentary and descriptions of typical defects for each condition state.
