ON THE MINIMUM PERIOD OF AMBER SIGNAL LIGHT

STUDY WAS CONDUCTED TO FIND THE STANDARD VALUE FOR A MINIMUM AMBER PERIOD AND TO OBTAIN INDICES FOR THE EVALUATION THROUGH THE RESULTS FROM THE OBSERVATION SURVEY OF TRAFFIC BEHAVIOR WITH THE THEORETICAL VALUE AT THE SIGNALIZED INTERSECTION. THE RESULTS INDICATED THAT CURRENT AMBER PERIOD WAS NOT SUFFICIENT TO CLEAR INTERSECTION. HOWEVER, AN EXTREMELY PROLONGED AMBER PHASE WAS NOT APPROPRIATE DUE TO THE TRAFFIC CAPACITY AND THE INCREMENT OF PROBABILITY OF VEHICLES STOPPED IN THE INTERSECTION. THE FOLLOWING INDICES WERE SUGGESTED TO BE UTILIZED: (1) STOPPING PROBABILITY OR THE CRITICAL DISTANCES TO THE INTERSECTION, (2) AVERAGE NUMBER OF VEHICLES PER CYCLE WHICH PASSES THROUGH THE INTERSECTION AT THE RED SIGNAL, AND (3) THE STOPPING RATIO OF THE FIRST VEHICLE IN THE INTERSECTION. /AUTHOR/
