THE RESEARCHABLE ASPECTS OF NO-PASSING ZONE SIGNING AND MARKING

THE PRESENT SYSTEM OF MARKING AND SIGNING NO-PASSING ZONES IS INCONSISTENT AND IN MANY INSTANCES PROVIDES INADEQUATE NOTIFICATION OF THE PASSING RESTRICTION. THE PURPOSE OF THE STUDY WAS TO FIND THE RESEARCHABLE ASPECTS OF THE NO-PASSING ZONE SIGNING AND MARKING PROBLEM. DETERMINATION OF RESEARCHABLE ASPECTS WAS BASED ON A REVIEW OF ALL PERTINENT LITERATURE, RESULTS OF THREE PILOT STUDIES, AND FINDINGS FROM A QUESTIONNAIRE. THE PILOT STUDIES CONSISTED OF EVALUATING THE USE OF: DUAL-MOUNTED DO NOT PASS SIGNS, ADVANCE WARNING HIGHWAY MARKINGS FOR NO-PASSING ZONES, AND FLUORESCENT AND REFLECTIVE TAPE TO INCREASE THE TARGET VALUE OF THE PASS WITH CARE AND DO NOT PASS SIGNS. RESULTS OF THE PILOT STUDIES INDICATE THAT THE USE OF AN ADDITIONAL SIGN MOUNTED ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE ROAD, A SIGN WITH GREATER TARGET VALUE, AND THE USE OF ADVANCE WARNING HIGHWAY MARKINGS WOULD, BOTH INDIVIDUALLY AND IN COMBINATION, REDUCE HAZARDOUS VIOLATIONS OF NO-PASSING ZONES. THE QUESTIONNAIRE REVEALED A NATIONWIDE LACK OF UNIFORMITY IN SIGNING PRACTICES AT NO-PASSING ZONES, AND A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT METHODS USED TO LOCATE NO-PASSING ZONES IN THE FIELD. /AUTHOR/
