IMPLEMENTATION OF A CITIZENS BAND RADIO COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM FOR THE JOHN C. LODGE FREEWAY
A CITIZENS BAND RADIO TRAFFIC REPORTING PROGRAM HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED AND IS OPERATING IN THE CITY OF DETROIT COVERING THE LENGTH OF THE JOHN C. LODGE FREEWAY. IT IS A COOPERATIVE EFFORT BETWEEN THE GENERAL MOTORS RESEARCH LABORATORIES, THE CITY OF DETROIT DEPARTMENT OF STREETS AND TRAFFIC, THE NATIONAL PROVING GROUND FOR FREEWAY SURVEILLANCE CONTROL AND ELECTRONIC TRAFFIC AIDS, AND THE CITY OF DETROIT POLICE DEPARTMENT. FOUR RECEIVING STATIONS AND A SINGLE, 5 WATT TRANSMITTER PROVIDES SOLID TWO-WAY VOICE COMMUNICATIONS FROM ANYWHERE ON THE LODGE TO THE BASE STATION. DISPOSITION OF THE CALLS TO THE PROPER AGENCY IS MADE BY A TRAINED BASE STATION OPERATOR. RESULTS OF OPERATIONS EMPHASIZE THE NEED FOR A CLEAR CHANNEL FOR HIGHWAY COMMUNICATION AND THE COOPERATION OF LAW ENFORCEMENT AND COGNIZANT GOVERNMENT AGENCIES. /AUTHOR/
