Sustainability in Your Words

Sustainability has become a popular buzzword in the transportation sector, but its meaning and implementation can be vague and broad. This article discusses results from an online survey of Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) members regarding current practices in sustainable transportation. Respondents were asked how they define sustainability, how they were incorporating sustainability into their work, and to provide examples of their sustainability practices. More than half of the respondents incorporate all three of the pillars of sustainability (environmental, economic and social) into their definition of sustainability. The results showed that 82% of responding agencies were aware of sustainable practices. Planning and design guidelines were the key fields of practice that were incorporating sustainability. From the examples provided by respondents, ITE has indentified best practice cases in four categories: policy; planning; design and construction; and management and operations. The results of the survey and these best practice cases will be published in a forthcoming ITE report.
