ZONE OF INFLUENCE OF A TRAFFIC SIGNAL (PRELIMINARY COPY OF FINAL REPORT)

AN EVALUATION WAS MADE OF PLATOONING CHARACTERISTICS AS VEHICLES ARRIVE AT VARIOUS OBSERVATION POINTS DOWNSTREAM FROM A SIGNALIZED INTERSECTION. THE RESULTS SHOW, FOR EACH DATA POINT, THE PERCENTAGE OF OBSERVED VEHICLES REMAINING IN THE PLATOON, THE SPEED OF AVERAGE PLATOON ARRIVALS, AND THE TIME OF ARRIVAL (OFFSETS) OF THE AVERAGE PLATOON. THE FINDINGS PROVIDE A MEASURE OF THE PLATOON DISPERSION TO DETERMINE WHEN AND WHERE PROVISIONS SHOULD BE MADE FOR THE INTERCONNECTION OF TRAFFIC SIGNALS AND THE JUSTIFICATION FOR SIGNALS BASED ON INTERRUPTION OF CONTINUOUS TRAFFIC FLOW. /BPR/
