RED COLORED PAVEMENT

A STUDY DESIGNED TO EVALUATE THE EFFECTS OF RED COLORED PAVEMENTS ON VARIOUS ASPECTS OF DRIVERS BEHAVIOR AT A RAMP LOCATION ENDING IN A STOP CONDITION IS DISCUSSED. A BEFORE AND AFTER EXPERIMENT WAS PERFORMED ON A RAMP ENDING WITH A STOP SIGN AND AT THE RAMPS INTERSECTION WITH A ONE-WAY ROADWAY. SPEEDS AND LAGS FOR BOTH DAY AND NIGHT CONDITIONS WERE MEASURED BEFORE AND AFTER THE RAMP WAS PAVED RED. A LAG WAS CONSIDERED AS THE TIME INTERVAL BETWEEN THE ARRIVAL OF A VEHICLE AT THE STOP SIGN AND THE ARRIVAL OF THE FIRST VEHICLE ON THE ACROSS ROADWAY AT THE CENTER OF THE INTERSECTION. DAYTIME SPEEDS WERE SIGNIFICANTLY LOWER AFTER THE RAMP WAS PAVED RED, BUT FOR NIGHTTIME SPEEDS AND FOR DAYTIME AND NIGHTTIME LAGS THERE WERE NO SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES. /BPR/
