DETAILED ANALYSIS OF ACCIDENTS INVOLVING CYCLISTS AND MOPED DRIVERS. 1. CYCLISTS

INJURY-PRODUCING, POLICE-REPORTED CYCLIST ACCIDENTS IN SWEDEN DURING 1968 WERE ANALYZED TO DETERMINE PRE-THROUGH POSTCRASH CIRCUMSTANCES. SPECIAL KINDS OF ACCIDENTS, SUCH AS THOSE INVOLVING VEHICLE DEFIENCIES OR DRIVER INTOXICATION, WERE EXCLUDED. OF THE 1,697 ACCIDENTS, 79% OCCURRED IN BUILT-UP AREAS AND 68% BETWEEN APRIL AND SEPTEMBER. ONE-THIRD OF THE CYCLISTS WERE CHILDREN. MEN WERE INVOLVED TWICE AS OFTEN AS WOMEN. THE MOST FREQUENT CONFLICT (83%) WAS THAT OF CYCLIST--MOTOR VEHICLE, WHILE 10% WERE SINGLE-VEHICLE ACCIDENTS. THE CYCLIST--MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENTS OCCURRED MOSTLY IN BUILT-UP AREAS, AND 75% OF THESE WERE AT INTERSECTIONS. THE TWO MAIN CAUSES OF INTERSECTION ACCIDENTS WERE FAILURE OF ONE OR BOTH OPERATORS TO YIELD RIGHT-OF-WAY AND LEFT TURNS IN FRONT ON ON-COMING TRAFFIC. SPECIAL-PRIORITY INTERSECTION RULES WERE BROKEN MORE OFTEN BY CYCLISTS THAN BY MOTOR VEHICLE DRIVERS. NON-INTERSECTION ACCIDENTS WERE CAUSED MAINLY BY MOTOR VEHICLES OVERTAKING CYCLISTS AND, AGAIN, BY LEFT-TURNING CYCLISTS IN FRONT OF ON-COMING TRAFFIC. OF THE SINGLE-VEHICLE ACCIDENTS IN BUILT-UP AREAS, 45% OCCURRED WHEN THE CYCLIST PASSED A PARKED CAR AT THE TIME ITS DOOR WAS BEING OPENED TOWARD THE ROADWAY. /AUTHOR/
