ADHESION OF VEHICLE TIRES ON ICY SURFACES, PARTS 1 AND 2 /IN GERMAN/

A TIRE TEST RIG, IN WHICH THE TIRE RUNS ON THE INTERNAL SURFACE OF A DRUM, PERMITTING MEASUREMENTS ON BRAKED AND DRIVEN WHEELS, WAS ADAPTED TO ALLOW MEASUREMENTS OF TIRE ADHESION ON SIMULATED "BLACK ICE". A TOTAL RADIATION PYROMETER MEASURED THE SURFACE TEMPERATURE OF THE ICE THAT HAD FORMED ON THE DRUM SURFACE JUST BEFORE WHEEL-CONTACT. SINCE IT WAS FOUND THAT THE FRICTION COEFFICIENT DID NOT INCREASE SIGNIFICANTLY WITH DURATION OF TESTING AT TEMPERATURES ABOVE -5 DEGREES C., TEST MEASUREMENTS WERE MADE AT BETWEEN 0 AND -5 DEGREES C. THE EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS OBTAINED WHEN TIRES WITH AND WITHOUT STUDS AND WITH SNOW- CHAINS ARE RUN ON THE SURFACE OF SMOOTH ICE PROVIDED BY THE TEST RIG ARE DISCUSSED. TESTS WITH WINTER TIRES FITTED WITH STUDS PROTRUDING 1.3 AND 1.9 MM. 1# RESPECTIVELY INDICATED THAT TEMPERATURE HAS NO INFLUENCE ON THE SLIDING COEFFICIENT OF STUDDED TIRES.
