THIS MONOGRAPH DESCRIBES DRIVING AND THE FORCES WHICH RELATE TO SKILLFUL AND SAFE PERFORMANCE IN A WAY MOST USEFUL FOR THOSE WHO WRITE MANUALS FOR BEGINNING DRIVERS, ESPECIALLY STATE MOTOR VEHICLE ADMINISTRATORS. EMPHASIS IS PLACED ON THOSE ASPECTS OF DRIVING KNOWN TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH VIOLATIONS, ACCIDENTS, INJURIES, AND TRAFFIC FLOW. THE ROLE OF THE DRIVER AS ONE ELEMENT IN A TRAFFIC SYSTEM IS DISCUSSED WITH EMPHASIS ON WHAT HE CAN DO AS A DRIVER TO IMPROVE EFFICIENCY AND SAFETY. DESCRIPTION OF THE DRIVING TASK IS DIVIDED INTO FOUR PARTS: THE TASK AND SKILLS NEEDED TO PERFORM IT; GENERAL PERFORMANCE SKILLS; COMMON DRIVING MANEUVERS; SELECTED CONDITIONS OF HIGHWAY, WEATHER, VEHICLE, AND DRIVER WHICH INFLUENCE THE DRIVING TASK. /HSL/
