A THEORY OF DRIVER MOTIVATION - PHASE TWO- TRAFFIC SAFETY VIEWS OF OLDER DRIVERS

AN ATTEMPT WAS MADE TO IDENTIFY SIGNIFICANT AREAS IN WHICH THERE IS AN APPARENT VARIANCE BETWEEN BEHAVIORAL PRECEPTS OF TRAFFIC SAFETY CAMPAIGNS AND THOSE HELD BY SELECTED INTERVIEW SUBJECTS, AND TO PROPOSE SOME LIKELY ALTERNATIVES TO ORTHODOX OR CONVENTIONAL SAFETY THINKING. FINDINGS INCLUDE: (1) ADULTS VIEWED PERSONAL AUTOMOBILES AS THE MOST CONVENIENT FORM OF TRANSPORTATION; (2) PLEASURE INCREASES WITH DRIVING MILEAGE UP TO 6,000 TO 8,000 MILES ANNUALLY, AFTER WHICH IT DECREASES TO ZERO AT APPROXIMATELY 40,000 MILES PER YEAR; (3) SLOW DRIVERS, FARM AND CONSTRUCTION VEHICLES, AND INADEQUATE HIGHWAYS WERE THE PRIMARY REASONS GIVEN FOR CONSTRAINED FREEDOM OF MOBILITY; (4) RADAR AND SPEED MEASUREMENT DEVICES WERE CONSIDERED GREAT RESTRICTIVE DEVICES ON SPEED; (5) DIFFERENT SPEED LIMITS FOR CARS AND TRUCKS WERE CONSIDERED AN IMPEDANCE TO THE SMOOTH FLOW OF TRAFFIC; (6) HIGHWAY SIGNS ARE NOT AS HELPFUL AS THEY SHOULD BE BECAUSE THERE ARE TOO MANY OF THEM AND THEY ARE NOT UNIFORM; (7) DRIVER EDUCATION WOULD IMPROVE ATTITUDES OF YOUNG PEOPLE; (8) SPEED, INATTENTION, ALCOHOL, AND THE DRIVERS ATTITUDE ARE MOST OFTEN THOUGHT OF AS CAUSES OF ACCIDENTS; (9) THREE-LANE ROADS AND YIELD SIGNS WERE CRITICIZED; AND (10) MOST THOUGHT COURTS WERE TOO LENIENT WITH THE HABITUAL OFFENDER.
