TIRE WEAR CHARACTERISTICS OF TRUCKS AND TRUCK COMBINATIONS

LONGER COMBINATIONS OF TRUCKS AND TRAILERS FOR PURPOSES OF THIS DISCUSSION ARE LIMITED BY THE ADDITION OF ONE TRAILER TO STANDARD LENGTH COMBINATIONS. THE NUMBER OF NEW CARCASSES INSTALLED ON THE AVERAGE ACTIVE TRUCK-TRACTOR AND TRAILER COMBINATION DURING THE AVERAGE CARCASS LIFE IN MILES GENERALLY EQUALS THE NUMBER OF TIRE POSITIONS ON THAT COMBINATION. DURING ANY MILEAGE INTERVAL SUCH AS THE MILEAGE EQUAL TO AVERAGE CARCASS LIFE, THE TOTAL TREAD RUBBER INPUT FOR THE AVERAGE ACTIVE TRUCK-TRACTOR AND TRAILER COMBINATION IN THE FORM OF NEW TIRE TREAD DEPTH PLUS RECAP TREAD DEPTH GENERALLY EQUALS THE TOTAL TREAD RUBBER OUTPUT FROM THAT COMBINATION IN THE FORM OF RUBBER WORN OFF IN SERVICE AND TREAD RUBBER LEFT ON SCRAPPED TIRES. THE RATE OF WEAR OF DRIVEN TIRES APPEARS TO BE A FUNCTION OF THE RATIO OF AVERAGE REQUIRED TRACTIVE EFFORT TO AVERAGE TIRE LOAD AND CAN BE APPROXIMATED BY USING AN EQUATION. THE SUMMARY OF DESIGN WEAR RATES AND A COMPARISON OF TIRE OPERATING COSTS ARE PRESENTED IN TABULAR FORM.
