THE CHILD PEDESTRIAN

THIS ARTICLE REPORTS ON THE RESEARCH PRESENTED IN THE BOOK "YOUNG CHILDREN IN TRAFFIC" BY STINA SANDELS, PUBLISHED IN SWEDEN IN 1968. UNDER HER DIRECTION, THE RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF CHILD PSYCHOLOGY IN STOCKHOLM HAS BEEN CARRYING ON A SERIES OF INVESTIGATIONS CONCERNING TRAFFIC MATURITY IN CHILDREN. FROM 1960-67 SEVERAL STUDIES WERE MADE OF THE BEHAVIOR OF CHILDREN, AGES 4-10 YEARS. THE RESULTS SHOWED THAT THE CHILD MUST OVERCOME GAPS IN LANGUAGE, VISION, PERCEPTION AND COMPREHENSION, AND THEN TRY TO MEET THE RULES OF TRAFFIC SAFETY. HE MUST MATURE INTO THE ROLE OF A PEDESTRIAN BEFORE HE CAN BE CONSIDERED SAFE. YET IT IS THIS MATURATION PERIOD THAT JEOPARDIZES HIS SAFETY THE MOST. IT IS HOPED THAT CONTINUING RESEARCH WILL SUCCEED IN HELPING TO ELIMINATE THIS PARADOX AS MUCH AS THE RESEARCH THUS FAR HAS SUCEEDED IN DEFINING IT.
