PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENTS WHO? WHEN? WHERE? HOW?

ACCIDENT REPORTS SUBMITTED TO THE IDAHO DEPARTMENT OF LAW ENFORCEMENT SHOW A TOTAL OF 259 PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENTS DURING 1967 AND 235 DURING 1968 OCCURRING ON CITY STREETS, COUNTRY ROADS AND STATE HIGHWAYS. ANALYSIS OF THE PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT REPORTS PRODUCED THE FOLLOWING FINDINGS: MOST PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENTS OCCUR IN GOOD WEATHER AND IDEAL ROAD CONDITIONS DURING DAYLIGHT HOURS. MORE PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENTS OCCUR IN THE LATE AFTERNOON AND EARLY EVENING HOURS FROM 3:00 P.M. TO 6:00 P.M. THAN AT ANY OTHER TIME. DRIVERS BETWEEN THE AGES OF 15 AND 23 ARE INVOLVED IN MORE PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENTS THAN ANY OTHER AGE DRIVERS. TUESDAY, WEDNESDAY AND FRIDAY HAVE HIGHER PERCENTAGES OF ACCIDENTS THAN THE REST OF THE DAYS. SUNDAY HAS THE HIGHEST PERCENTAGE OF NIGHT ACCIDENTS. THE NUMBER OF ACCIDENTS PER MONTH REMAINS FAIRLY CONSTANT; IT RISES TO A HIGH DURING AUGUST AND DROPS TO A LOW DURING MAY. MOST OF THE DRIVERS LIVE IN THE CITY AND COUNTY IN WHICH THE PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENTS OCCURRED. ALMOST ALL THE VEHICLES INVOLVED IN PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENTS WERE PASSENGER CARS. PEDESTRIANS BETWEEN THE AGES OF 2 AND 13 ARE INVOLVED IN MORE ACCIDENTS THAN ANY OTHER AGE. THE MAJORITY OF ACCIDENTS INVOLVING ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AGE PEDESTRIANS OCCUR AT TIMES NOT ASSOCIATED WITH SCHOOL ATTENDANCE. THE PEDESTRIANS WERE AT FAULT IN MOST OF THESE ACCIDENTS. CITY STREETS HAVE MORE ACCIDENTS PER YEAR THAN ANY OTHER ROAD TYPES. URBAN STREETS ALSO HAVE THE HIGHEST ACCIDENT RATE OF ALL ROAD TYPES. COUNTY ROADS HAVE THE LEAST NUMBER OF ACCIDENTS PER YEAR AND THE LOWEST ACCIDENT RATE. THE RATES OF THESE CASES ARE BASED ON VEHICLE MILES OF TRAVEL AND DO NOT TAKE INTO ACCOUNT PEDESTRIAN EXPOSURE. MORE ACCIDENTS OCCUR AT MID-BLOCK LOCATIONS THAN AT INTERSECTIONS. MORE ACCIDENTS OCCUR AT NON-SIGNALIZED INTERSECTIONS THAN AT SIGNALIZED INTERSECTIONS. AT SIGNALIZED INTERSECTION THE MAJORITY OF THE ACCIDENTS WERE DUE TO DRIVERS ERROR. PEDESTRIANS AND DRIVERS WERE EQUALLY AT FAULT AT NON-SIGNALIZED INTERSECTIONS. THE MAJORITY OF ACCIDENTS AT MID-BLOCK LOCATIONS WERE DUE TO PEDESTRIANS. THE MAJORITY OF PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENTS RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURIES. /AUTHOR/
