USED CAR SAFETY STANDARDS (VEHICLE SAFETY STATUS) FINAL REPORT. VOLUME 1
DATA WERE COLLECTED ON 8,543 CARS UP TO FIVE YEARS OLD IN ORDER TO DETERMINE VEHICLE CONDITION AND THE FACTORS AFFECTING IT. THE MOST SERIOUS DEFECT, WHILE NOT THE MOST COMMON, WAS POOR CONDITION OF THE FRONT END GEOMETRY ON VEHICLES. INSPECTION TECHNIQUES AND METHOD PROBLEMS INCLUDED BALL JOINT CHECKING, BRAKE TESTING, DAMPER TESTING, AND HEADLAMP TESTING. A SUGGESTED METHOD OF CONNECTING VEHICLE CONDITION WITH ACCIDENT FREQUENCY AND SEVERITY IS INCLUDED. THE REQUIRED FREQUENCY OF MOTOR VEHICLE INSPECTION IS DISCUSSED, AND IT IS CONCLUDED THAT FREQUENCY SHOULD BE BASED ON THE COMPONENTS NEEDING MOST FREQUENT EXAMINATION, WITH SOME BEING EXAMINED TWICE YEARLY AND OTHERS YEARLY. CONCLUSIONS ARE PRESENTED DEALING WITH RATES OF DETERIORATION, HEADLAMPS, SUSPENSION DEFECTS, AND ENGINE TUNE. RECOMMENDATIONS ARE MADE FOR CORRECTING THE PROBLEMS. /HSL/
