THE CORNERING CAPACITY OF STUDDED TIRES
TESTS OF INDIVIDUAL TIRES ON A SPECIAL CORNERING TRAILER SHOW THAT STUDDED TIRES, EVEN WHEN WORN, HAVE MATERIALLY LARGER CORNERING CAPACITY THAN DO NEW TIRES WITHOUT STUDS. WHEN MOUNTED ON AN AUTOMOBILE, HOWEVER, THIS INCREASED EFFECTIVENESS IS NOT REALIZED IF THE STUDDED TIRES ARE MOUNTED ON THE REAR WHEELS ONLY. WHEN STUDDED TIRES ARE PLACED ON ALL FOUR WHEELS THE CORNERING CAPACITY OF THE VEHICLE, AS MEASURED BY DEVELOPED LATERAL COEFFICIENT OF FRICTION, MAY BE INCREASED BY 50 TO 60 PER CENT. /AUTHOR/
