INJURY PATTERNS IN ROAD TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS

RESULTS ARE PRESENTED OF A NATION-WIDE FIELD INVESTIGATION REGARDING TRAFFIC ACCIDENT CASUALTIES. INFORMATION WAS OBTAINED REGARDING TYPE OF ACCIDENT, NUMBER AND SEVERITY OF INJURIES TO DIFFERENT GROSS BODY AREAS, HOSPITALIZATION RATE AND DURATION OF HOSPITAL TREATMENT. THREE YEARS LATER, A SAMPLE OF THE RECORDED CASES WAS CHECKED TO EVALUATE THE LOSS OF WORKING DAYS AND PERSISTANCE OF DISABILITY. IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE NUMBER OF ACCIDENTS COINCIDED WITH THE RUSH HOURS OF TRAFFIC AND THAT IN 71.7% ONLY ONE ROAD USER WAS INJURED IN THE ACCIDENT. THIRTY NINE PERCENT OF THE RECORDED CASES WERE HOSPITALIZED AND, OF THESE, 3.4% SUCCUMBED. THE NUMBER AND SEVERITY OF INJURIES VARIED IN THE DIFFERENT CATEGORIES OF ROAD USERS UNDER OBSERVATION. THE RISKS DECLINED IN THE FOLLOWING ORDER: PEDESTRIANS, MOTORCYCLISTS, MOPEDISTS, BICYCLISTS, CAR OCCUPANTS AND BUS/ LORRY OCCUPANTS. NOTEWORTHY ACCIDENT INJURY PATTERNS WERE IN THE HIGH INCIDENCE OF SEVERE INJURY TO THE HEAD AND THE LOWER LEG IN PEDESTRIANS, TO THE CHEST IN CAR DRIVERS AND TO THE HEAD, UPPER LIMB AND LOWER LIMB IN MOTORCYCLISTS. THE INCIDENCE OF MULTITRAUMA WAS HIGHEST IN PEDESTRIANS AND MOTORCYCLISTS AND LOWEST IN BUS AND LORRY OCCUPANTS. THE THREE YEAR FOLLOW-UP SHOWED A RATE OF PERSISTING DISABILITY OF 6.6% AND OF INVALIDITY OF 3.4%. THE RATE OF PERSISTING INVALIDITY WAS 1.9%.
