TRUCK PATHS ON SHORT RADIUS TURNS

TEMPLATES OF TURNING TRACK WIDTHS OF A 3-S2 TYPE TRUCK TRACTOR-SEMITRAILER COMBINATION ON SHORT RADIUS TURNS WERE DEVELOPED. THE DESIGN VEHICLE WAS A 60-FOOT LONG COMBINATION WITH 38 FEET BETWEEN THE PIVOT POINT AND THE REARMOST AXLE OF THE SEMITRAILER. THESE TEMPLATES WERE DEVELOPED USING A MODEL KNOWN AS A TRACTRIX INTEGRATOR. OFFTRACKING RESULTS OBTAINED BY USE OF THIS MODEL WERE COMPARED WITH DATA DEVELOPED FROM FIELD TESTS USING ACTUAL TRUCKS. THE GOOD CORRELATION OBTAINED BETWEEN MODEL AND FIELD TESTS RESULTS CONFIRMED THE VALIDITY OF THE TRACTRIX INTEGRATOR AS A MEANS OF SOLVING OFFTRACKING PROBLEMS. TABULATED DATA FOR TOTAL TRACK WIDTHS DEVELOPED BY THE DESIGN VEHICLE ON 48, 58, 73 AND 98 FOOT RADII, CURVE DATA FOR DEVELOPING THE INSIDE LANE EDGES, AND A BASIC COMPUTER PROGRAM TO COORDINATE CURVE DATA ARE GIVEN IN THE APPENDIX.
