THE INFLUENCE OF HORIZONTAL CURVE ADVISORY SPEED LIMITS ON SPOT-SPEEDS

THE EFFECTS OF ADVISORY SPEED LIMITS ON THE BEHAVIOR OF DRIVERS OF PASSENGER VEHICLES WERE EXAMINED ON HORIZONTAL CURVES OF TWO-LANE RURAL HIGHWAYS. TWELVE HORIZONTAL CURVES RANGING FROM 2 TO 12 DEGREES IN CURVATURE AND TWO TYPES OF SPEED SIGNS, ONE STANDARD AND ONE EXPERIMENTAL WERE USED IN THE EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN. STUDENTS T TEST AND ANALYSIS OF VARIANCE TECHNIQUES WERE USED IN THE ANALYSIS. THE RESULTS INDICATED THAT THE SPEED AT WHICH DRIVERS NEGOTIATED THE CENTERS OF THE CURVES DURING FAVORABLE WEATHER AND DAYLIGHT HOURS, WAS NOT RELATED TO THE POSTED ADVISORY SPEED AND THAT DRIVERS DID NOT DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN THE TWO TYPES OF ADVISORY SPEED SIGNS. /BPR/
