Load of help
Due to the fact that pavement strength is highly dependent on the strength of the roadbed underneath it, which is also dependent on the temperature and moisture properties, heavy traffic during the spring thaw causes faster degradation of the pavement and increased maintenance fees. Load restrictions for heavy traffic in the spring are usually imposed by Departments of Transportation (DOTs), but they are difficult to time with the climate. An objective guidance system to help Canadian DOTs determine the proper schedule for load adjustments in order to help fight frost heave in pavements is presented here.
