EXPERIMENTAL EVALUATION OF THE PERFORMANCE CRITERIA ON AN EXPERIMENTAL DRIVING SIMULATOR

THE VALIDITY AND RELIABILITY OF A DRIVING SIMULATOR IN RETRAINING PROBLEM DRIVERS WERE INVESTIGATED IN SEVERAL EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES. THE EFFECTS OF SIMULATOR PRACTICE AND A DISTRACTOR STRESSOR WERE USED TO EVALUATE CONCURRENT OR INTERNAL VALIDITY; PREDICTIVE VALIDITY WILL BE OBTAINED FROM FOLLOW-UP RECORDS OF DRIVER BEHAVIOR. RELIABILITY FIGURES FOR THE SIMULATOR ERROR PERFORMANCE CRITERIA WERE ESTIMATED FROM STABILITY COEFFICIENTS OVER SUCCESSIVE FILM SHOWINGS. THE STUDIES WERE REPEATED IN PART WITH YOUNG, BUT EXPERIENCED AND AVERAGE, COLLEGE STUDENT DRIVERS FOR COMPARISON DATA. NO FOLLOW-UP DATA ARE AVAILABLE YET TO TEST THE VALIDITY OF THE SIMULATOR IN HELPING EXPERIENCED DRIVERS IMPROVE THEIR ACTUAL DRIVING PERFORMANCE. HOWEVER, NO IMPROVEMENT IN SIMULATOR DRIVING PERFORMANCE WAS SHOWN FOR EXPERIENCED DRIVERS. CONSEQUENTLY, THE VALIDITY OF THE SIMULATOR FOR THIS PURPOSE IS SUSPECT AND APPARENTLY ZERO. MOST SIMULATOR PERFORMANCE CRITERIA WERE AT LEAST MARGINALLY RELIABLE, BUT ALSO NEED IMPROVEMENT. /AUTHOR/
