WASHINGTON OPTS FOR STAND-ALONE AUTOMATION

THE FULLY AUTOMATED TRANSIT OPERATION HAS SPECIFIED STAND-ALONE CAPABILITY IN ITS SIGNALING AND TRAIN REGULATION SYSTEMS SO AS TO ALLOW MANUAL OPERATION OF THE FULL SCHEDULED SERVICE IN THE EVENT OF A COMPUTER OR COMMUNICATION FAILURE. THREE INDEPENDENT SUBSYSTEMS, NAMELY AUTOMATIC TRAIN PROTECTION (A.T.P.), AUTOMATIC TRAIN OPERATION (A.T.O.), AND AUTOMATIC TRAIN SUPERVISION (A.T.S.) ARE DESCRIBED. DATA SUPPLIED BY THE A.T.S. ARE USED TO UPDATE CONSOLE DISPLAYS. COMMUNICATION WITH THE TRAINS FOR A.T.S. IS PROVIDED BY TRAIN-TO-WAYSIDE COMMUNICATION SYSTEM KNOWN AS METRO-LINK. THIS SIGNAL IS ONLY INSERTED IN THE RAILS AT PASSENGER STATIONS AND AT THE APPROACHES TO INTERLOCKINGS. THE KEEPING OF TRAINS ON SCHEDULE BY THE COMPUTER IS DESCRIBED. THE PRIMARY FUNCTIONS OF THE COMPUTER ARE REVIEWED. OPERATION OF THE DOORS AND ROUTINE DISPATCHING AT PASSENGER STATIONS IS OUTLINED. THE STRUCTURE OF THE SUPERVISORY CONTROL SYSTEM IS ILLUSTRATED.
