THE PEDESTRIAN

THIS ARTICLE BRIEFLY DESCRIBES A STUDY MADE BY THE TRANSPORT AND ROAD RESEARCH LABORATORY IN CONJUCTION WITH THE HAMPSHIRE CONSTABULARY OF ALL ACCIDENTS IN HAMPSHIRE IN WHICH PEDESTRIANS WERE INJURED WHILE CROSSING THE ROAD. SUCH ACCIDENTS FOR THE FIRST HALF OF 1971 HAVE BEEN ANALYZED AND THE MAIN FINDINGS FOR PEDESTRIANS AGED OVER 15, FROM WHOM IT WAS POSSIBLE TO OBTAIN INFORMATION ARE OUTLINED. THE DATA INCLUDE BEHAVIOR OF THE PEDESTRIAN, HIS PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS, AND THE CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE ACCIDENT. SOME SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES BETWEEN ACCIDENTS TO THE ELDERLY AND TO OTHER ADULTS ARE DISCUSSED. /TRRL/
