THE EFFECTS OF ANTIHISTAMINICS ON DRIVING ABILITY

THE NEW ANTIHISTAMINIC DRUG LAVEGYL HAS BEEN TRIED ON 132 PERSONS IN THE COURSE OF 3 SERIES OF EXPERIMENTS. DOSES OF 2,3 AND 4 MG A DAY WERE ADMINISTERED DURING A PERIOD OF 5 TO 6 DAYS. INFLUENCE ON REACTIVE POWER CONCENTRATION, PSYCHOMOTOR FUNCTIONING DYNAMIC VISION AND COORDINATION BY TRAVEGYL COULD NOT BE PROVED, NEITHER WAS THERE ANY PREJUDICE TO THE SUBJECTS' INDIVIDUAL IMPRESSION OF THEIR PERFORMANCE AT ANY DOSE. THE ONLY CHANGE UNDER INFLUENCE OF TAVEGYL WAS A DIMINUTION OF PROMPTNESS OF REACTION AT A DOSE OF 1 MG 3 TIMES A DAY, BUT ONLY IN A HOMOGENEOUS RANDOM SAMPLE. IT IS, THEREFORE TO BE EXPECTED THAT A DOSE OF TAVEGYL OF 1 MG TWICE A DAY OR 2 MG TWICE A DAY DOES NOT INFLUENCE DRIVING ABILITY. A LARGER DOSE OR MORE FREQUENT ADMINISTRATION ARE NOT ADVISEABLE. NO SUCH DOSES ARE RECOMMENDED, CLINICAL EXPERIMENTS HAVING PROVED THE EFFECTIVENESS OF A NORMAL DOSE OF 2 MG A DAY.
