ROAD SAFETY AND STREET LIGHTING

THE AUTHOR OUTLINES THE HISTORY OF STREET LIGHTING UP TO THE PUBLICATION OF GERMAN STANDARD DIN 5044 IN JULY 1970, WHICH SETS OUT REQUIREMENTS FOR LUMINANCE. HE DISCUSSES THE IMPORTANCE OF CORRECT LUMINANCE, UNIFORMITY AND INTENSITY OF LIGHTING FOR SAFETY, AND POINTS OUT THAT STREET LIGHTING IS SUPPLEMENTED BY LIGHT-COLORED ROAD SURFACINGS AND VEHICLE HEADLAMPS. FINALLY HE STATES THAT FOR ECONOMIC REASONS THE LIGHTING OF MAIN TRAFFIC ROUTES IS ONLY JUSTIFIED IN AREAS WHERE ACCIDENTS ARE LIKELY TO OCCUR, I.E. INTERCHANGES.
