HIGH-MAST LIGHTING SAVES ENERGY, STOPS CLUTTER

HIGH-MAST LIGHTING HAS BEEN USED FOR A SIX-ACRE PARKING AREA AND PEDESTRIAN MALL ON THE CAMPUS OF KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY. THE SYSTEM IS SAID TO REDUCE AUTO TAMPERING AND VANDALISM IN THE AREA BY MORE THAN 90% AND HAS HAD A LOWER INITIAL AND OPERATING COST THAN A COMPARABLE LOW-MOUNTING SYSTEM. THE INSTALLATION USES A 130-FOOT POLE OF SPECIAL- GRADE LOW-ALLOY STEEL THAT DEVELOPS A THIN ADHERENT COATING OF RUSH AND REQUIRES NO MAINTENANCE. THE SYSTEM IS MOUNTED ON A TUBULAR-STEEL RING THAT CAN BE LOWERED AND RAISED BY AN ELECTRICALLY OPERATED WINCH IN THE POLE BASE. MOUNTED ON THE SUPPORT RING ARE 12 1000-W LAMPS. SIX OF THE FIXTURES HAVE A SYMMETRIC LIGHT-DISTRIBUTION PATTERN, WHILE THE REMAINDER HAVE A NEMA TYPE III ASYMMETRIC PATTERN. HIGHWAY OFFICIALS REQUESTED THAT BOTH TYPES BE USED SO THAT THEY COULD STUDY THE POSSIBILITY OF USING ONE OR THE OTHER ON KANSAS HIGHWAYS. THE ENTIRE SYSTEM DRAWS LESS THAN 14 KW, A THIRD LESS THAN A COMPARABLE MERCURY-VAPOR SYSTEM WOULD REQUIRE. ADVANTAGES OF THE SYSTEM WITH RESPECT TO INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE COSTS, APPEARANCE, AND PERSONAL SECURITY ARE NOTED.
