USE OF THE MONTE CARLO METHOD IN TRAFFIC ENGINEERING /GERMAN/

THE IMPORTANT ELEMENTS OF TRAFFIC FLOW AT SIGNAL- CONTROLLED ROAD JUNCTIONS WERE DETERMINED BY MEANS OF VARIOUS MEASURING METHODS INCLUDING A FILM CAMERA, TIME RECORDER, MAGNETIC TAPE AND TRANSMITTING APPARATUS, AND THEN STATISTICALLY ANALYZED. A SIMULATION MODEL WAS USED TO CALCULATE WAITING TIME AT STOP LINES, AND A FUNCTION WAS DEVELOPED WHICH ENABLED THE AVERAGE WAITING TIMES TO BE DETERMINED FOR ANY DESIRED VARIATION OF PHASE TIMES AND TRAFFIC VOLUME. THE AUTHORS SHOW HOW AN APPROXIMATE SOLUTION FOR OBTAINING OPTIMUM TRAFFIC FLOW CAN BE REACHED BY MINIMIZING THE TOTAL WAITING TIMES AT ALL ACCESS ROADS. /FG/RRL/
