BUS PRIORITY IN GREATER LONDON. 4. THE IMPLEMENTATION OF BUS LANES AND THEIR EFFECT

THE CONSULTATIVE PROCESSES, ASSOCIATED PUBLICITY, AND THE CONVERSION OF UNCONTROLLED ZEBRA CROSSINGS TO SIGNAL-CONTROLLED PELICAN CROSSINGS IN BUS LANES ARE DISCUSSED, AND THE PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH TWO RECENTLY-IMPLEMENTED LANES ARE OUTLINED. PRELIMINARY RESULTS OF THE BEFORE-AND-AFTER STUDIES ARE GIVEN, AND THEY TEND TO INDICATE THAT THE SCHEMES ARE EITHER ACHIEVING, OR, IN SOME CASES, EXCEEDING, THEIR DESIGN OBJECTIVES. THE LANES, ONE WITH-FLOW AND ONE CONTRA-FLOW, ARE PRODUCING SIGNIFICANT SAVINGS TO BUSES AND, THROUGH SUITABLE TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT MEASURES, ARE NOT HAVING ANY SIGNIFICANT ADVERSE EFFECT ON OTHER TRAFFIC. /AUTHOR/
