AUTOMATION WILL PROVIDE ON-TIME PERFORMANCE

SAN FRANCISCO'S BAY AREA RAPID TRANSIT (BART) SYSTEM'S COMPUTER SYSTEM IS DESCRIBED. FROM BART'S CENTRAL COMPUTER CONTROL COMPLEX, THE MOST FULLY AUTOMATED RAPID TRANSIT SYSTEM OPERATES A PAIR OF COMPUTERS (ONE ON LINE AND ONE IN RESERVE), DIRECTS TRAINS, AND DISPLAYS ON THREE CONSOLES (1) TRAIN POSITION ALONG THE VARIOUS ROUTES, (2) SYSTEM SUPPORT FACILITIES AND ALARM CONDITIONS (FIRES, ETC.), AND (3) THE SYSTEM'S ELECTRIFICATION FACILITIES. THE CONTROL STRATEGY LOGIC AND HOW IT OPERATES, WHETHER IN A REAL LIFE SITUATION SO THAT CORRECTIVE STRATEGIES CAN BE UTILIZED IN SCHEDULING TRAINS OR IN A SIMULATION PROGRAM FOR OPTIMIZING FUNCTIONS, IS DISCUSSED.
