BUS PRIORITIES AND LANES IN GREAT BRITAIN

RECENT LEGISLATION AND FUNDING HAVE ENCOURAGED MANY AREAS TO ADOPT BUS PRIORITY MEASURES. THESE INCLUDE: BUS ACTUATED SIGNALS, EXEMPTION FROM LEFT TURN RESTRICTIONS, ADDITIONAL SIGNAL PHASES FOR BUSES, AREA TRAFFIC CONTROL TO MINIMIZE BUS DELAY, RESERVED ROADWAYS OR LANES, CURBSIDE CONTRAFLOW, BUSWAYS AND TRACK ARRANGEMENTS. SEVERAL PROJECTS IN ENGLAND, AND AN EXTENSIVE, CONTROLLED-TRACK EXPERIMENT IN DENMARK ARE DESCRIBED. THIS EXPERIENCE MUST INCLUDE RECOGNITION OF SEVERAL IMPORTANT DIFFERENCES BETWEEN BRITISH AND AMERICAN CONDITIONS--THE LEVEL OF CAR OWNERSHIP IS LOWER, FEW CITIES HAVE ANY SIGNIFICANT LENGTH OF FREEWAYS, AND MOST CITIES HAVE A RADIAL PATTERN IN BRITAIN. THUS THE BUS PROVIDES THE ONLY SIGNIFICANT FORM OF TRANSIT FOR THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE IN SMALL AND MEDIUM SIZE CITIES. IN THE HALF DOZEN LARGE BRITISH CITIES, THE BUS WILL BE REQUIRED AS A FEEDER TO UPGRADED LINES AND TO SERVE CORRIDORS WITH NO RAIL FACILITIES. GROWING TECHNICAL CAPABILITY, COMBINED WITH THE REALIZATION THAT A GOOD LEVEL OF TRANSIT SERVICE MUST BE MAINTAINED TO PRESERVE CITY MOBILITY, MAKE THE PROSPECTS GOOD FOR UTILIATION OF BUS PRIORITY MEASURES.
