HIGHWAY COMMUNICATIONS TRUNK REQUIREMENTS

THE COMMUNICATIONS REQUIREMENTS OF FIFTEEN FUNCTIONS IN THE OPERATION OF A STATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM WERE ANALYZED IN THE COURSE OF THIS STUDY -- AUTOMATION, TRAFFIC FLOW CONTROL, OVERTAKING AND PASSING, ROUTE GUIDANCE, VARIABLE HIGHWAY SIGNS, MERGING CONTROL, TRAFFIC DATA COLLECTION, HIGHWAY REPAIR, DISABLED VEHICLE ASSISTANCE, EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE, SNOW REMOVAL, HIGHWAY CONDITIONS, ROAD CONDITION INFORMATION, OBSTACLE REMOVAL, AND EMERGENCY MEDICAL ASSISTANCE. THE COMPLETE SATISFACTION OF HIGHWAY COMMUNICATIONS REQUIREMENTS MUST INVOLVE A MIXTURE OF DATA AND VOICE MESSAGES. IN THIS ANALYSIS, THOSE FUNCTIONS WHICH MUST FOR THE PREDICTABLE FUTURE BE HANDLED IN THE FORM OF VOICE MESSAGES ARE SEPARATED FROM THOSE WHICH ARE ENVISIONED AS DATA FLOW. /HRB/
