BLOCKAGE OF SIGNS BY TRUCKS
THE THEORETICAL MATHEMATICAL ANALYSIS OF THE BLOCKAGE OF SIGNS BY TRUCKS WAS MADE PRIMARILY TO DETERMINE THE EFFECTS ON SIGNS; THE ANALYSIS IS EQUALLY APPLICABLE TO ANY INFORMATION SOURCE THAT DEPENDS ON STRAIGHT-LINE TRANSMISSION OF EITHER INFORMATION OR ACTUATING SIGNALS FOR IN-VEHICLE DISPLAYS. THE GEOMETRY OF THE BLOCKAGE PROBLEM CAN BE DEFINED IN TERMS OF THE LINES OF SIGHT DETERMINED BY THE EXTREMITIES OF THE SIGN AND THE TRUCK AS VIEWED FROM THE SIGN. THE ASSUMPTION OF CONSTANT VELOCITY AND FIXED POSITION OF THE MOTORIST TENDS TO INCREASE THE VALUES OF BLOCKAGE, SINCE MOTORISTS WILL ADJUST SPEED AND HEAD MOVEMENT IF THEY ARE INTENT ON OBSERVING A PARTICULAR ROAD SIGN. HOWEVER, IN AUTOMATIC OR ELECTRONIC TRANSMISSION TECHNIQUES, THE MOTORIST IS NOT VISUALLY AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM AND THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THESE LINE-OF-SIGHT BLOCKAGE VALUES INCREASES MARKEDLY. THIS OBVIOUSLY IMPLICATES CURRENT DEVELOPMENTS OF ELECTRONIC HIGHWAY GUIDANCE AND INFORMATION SYSTEMS. THE NOTION OF SIGN BLOCKAGE PROBABILITY CAN ALSO BE USED AS THE BASIS FOR DETERMINING WHEN TO INSTALL OVERHEAD SIGNS. /AUTHOR/
