WIND LOADING ON FREE-SWINGING TRAFFIC SIGNALS

EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS OF WIND LOADING TESTS ON 15 CONFIGURATIONS OF STANDARD STOP-LIGHT TRAFFIC SIGNALS ARE PRESENTED. BOTH 8 IN. AND 12 IN. LENSE SIGNALS WERE TESTED IN ONE, TWO, THREE AND FOUR LIGHT SET COMBINATIONS WITH BOTH STANDARD AND EXTENDED FULL CIRCULAR HOODS. ALL OF THE TESTS WERE PERFORMED ON FREE-SWINGING LIGHTS AND THE SIGNAL WAS ALLOWED TO ASSUME ITS NATURAL ORIENTATION TO THE FLOW. THE RESULTING WIND LOADING DATA ARE PLOTTED VERSUS WIND DYNAMIC PRESSURE. THE EFFECTS OF BOTH DAMPED AND UNDAMPED OSCILLATIONS OF CERTAIN CONFIGURATIONS ARE EXAMINED, AND SUGGESTIONS ARE PRESENTED FOR FURTHER WORK TO OPTIMIZE TRAFFIC SIGNAL DESIGN. /AUTHOR/
