Development of rutting criteria for bituminous mixes using wheel tracking device
Rutting is one of the most important criterions affecting the performance of bituminous pavements. Studies have been made by many researchers to establish relationships between the laboratory characteristics of mixes and their field performance. Pass or fail criteria for different mixes were developed to ensure the satisfactory rutting performance of bituminous mixes using wheel tracking devices. These performance criteria were incorporated in mix design procedures. However, such performance evaluation is not available in the mix design adopted in India. An attempt has been made in the present paper to develop acceptance criteria for rut depth for bituminous concrete mixes used in India. Critical rut depths have been selected on the basis of the relationship between the field rutting of mixes and corresponding rut depths measured using the indigenously developed Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT KGP) Rut Tester.
