SAE TIRE COMMITTEE STUDIES EFFECT OF TIRE WEAR ON WET PAVEMENT TRACTION

THE FOLLOWING CONCLUSIONS OF A PRELIMINARY REPORT ON EFFECT OF TIRE WEAR ON TRACTION APPEAR TO BE WELL SUPPORTED BY THE DATA: (1) THE COEFFICIENT OF FRICTION WITH WHEEL LOCKED AND WITH STRAIGHT FORWARD DIRECTION VARIES WITH SURFACE, SPEED, DEGREE OF TIRE WEAR. (2) ABSOLUTE VALUES OF THE COEFFICIENT FOR A GIVEN TIRE ON A GIVEN SURFACE AT A SPECIFIC SPEED CANNOT YET BE DETERMINED WITH ANY DEGREE OF ACCURACY, DUE TO THE UNCONTROLLED VARIABLES. (3) OTHER FACTORS BEING CONSTANT, COEFFICIENTS OF A TIRE ON A GIVEN SURFACE DECREASE WITH INCREASING SPEED WHEN THE SURFACE IS RELATIVELY SMOOTH AND SLIPPERY. (4) OTHER FACTORS BEING CONSTANT, THE COEFFICIENT OF A GIVEN TIRE ON A GIVEN SURFACE DECREASES WITH INCREASING WEAR. (5) DIFFERENT TREAD DESIGNS AND COMPUNDS HAVE A MEASURABLE EFFECT ON THE COEFFICIENT OBTAINED ON SMOOTH SURFACES. (6) RELATIVE TRACTION RATINGS OF TIRES COMPARED TO A CONTROL CAN BE OBTAINED QUITE ACCURATELY FROM MEASURED STOPPING DISTANCE BUT IS IMPRACTICAL ON SLIPPERY SURFACES ABOVE 40 MPH. /HSL/
