COMPUTER CONTROLS INCREASE TRAFFIC THROUGH TUNNEL

TRAFFIC FLOW THROUGH THE TWO SOUTHBOUND LANES OF NEW YORK'S LINCOLN TUNNEL INCREASES ALMOST 10% WHEN CONTROLLED BY AN ON-LINE COMPUTER. PHOTOCELLS LOCATED IN THE TUNNEL PROVIDE DENSITY DATA BY MEASURING SPEED AND LENGTH OF A SUCCESSION OF VEHICLES. A REMOTE COMPUTER ANALYZES THESE DATA TO APPLY CONTROLS BEFORE CONGESTION BEGINS. /AUTHOR/
