KEEPING TRACK OF JAPAN'S HIGH-SPEED PASSENGER TRAINS

HIGH-SPEED PASSENGER TRAINS HAVE BEEN USED IN JAPAN FOR ALMOST FIVE YEARS. AN EXTENSION OF THE SYSTEM IS BEING PLANNED. PRESENTLY ONLY AUTOMATIC TRAIN CONTROL IS BEING USED WHEREAS AUTOMATIC TRAIN OPERATION IS POSSIBLE AND IS BEING DEVELOPED. THE SYSTEM WILL BE CENTRALIZED FOR ORDINARY OPERATION AND DECENTRALIZED FOR EMERGENCY OPERATION. A TWIN-WIRE TRANSMISSION LINE BETWEEN THE RAILS, INDUCTIVELY COUPLED TO THE TRAIN, MAKES BLOCKS ABOUT 0.5KM LONG. THESE CONNECT THE TRAIN TO A RELAY STATION. THE RELAY STATION IS CONNECTED TO THE CENTRALIZED CONTROL AREA BY COAXIAL CABLE. SOME OF THE BETTER COMMUNICATION LINKS ARE MORE EXPENSIVE, WHICH FORCES ENGINEERING TRADEOFFS. SOME DETAILS OF THE CONTROL SYSTEMS ARE PRESENTED. AUTOMATIC DETECTION OF ABSTACLES ON OR NEAR THE TRACKS IS DIFFICULT AND EXPENSIVE BUT NEVERTHELESS MUST BE DONE. /AUTHOR/
