TRACK-TO-TRAIN COMMUNICATION OF A BINARY CODED TELEGRAM

EVEN THOUGH MUCH INFORMATION CAN BE TRANSMITTED FROM THE RAILS TO THE ENGINE, FUTURE RAILWAY CONTROL TECHNIQUES WILL REQUIRE AN INFORMATION CAPACITY HANDLED ONLY BY SUCH DEVICES AS AN INSULATED OPEN-WIRE TRANSMISSION LINE IN THE RANGE 20-150KHZ. SOME INSTALLATIONS OF THIS NATURE ARE ALREADY IN USE IN EUROPE. SINCE ELECTROMAGNETIC INTERFERENCE AND ELECTRONIC UNRELIABILITY CAN BE GREAT, THE BRITISH ARE TRYING TO DEVELOP SIMPLER AND MORE RELIABLE TRACK EQUIPMENT. THE SIGNALS ARE TRANSMITTED AS FM ON A 29KHZ CARRIER FOR THE COMPLETE SYSTEM. THERE ARE FIXED DATA (CONNECTED WITH NONCHANGING INFORMATION ABOUT TOPOLOGY-AFFECTED CONTROLS) AND VARIABLE DATA (ANYTHING ELSE). GROUPS OF 32 INDUCTION COILS ARE USED IN THE BINARY MODE (PHASE OF THE CARRIER IS THE DISTINGUISHING CODING) TO PROVIDE MESSAGES. SIMPLIFIED SYSTEMS CONTAINING MANY FEWER COILS ARE ALSO BEING TRIED, AND THESE ARE ENERGIZED FROM THE LOCOMOTIVE BY MEANS OF A TRANSMITTER INDUCTIVELY COUPLED TO THE LOOP ON THE TRACK. /BPR/
